What is Soy Protein Concentrate?

Soy Protein Concentrate (SPC) is manufactured from defatted soybean flakes by removing the soluble carbohydrates (oligosaccharides) and a significant portion of anti-nutritional factors (ANFs) through aqueous alcohol washing or heat processing, resulting in a protein content of at least 65% on a dry matter basis. SPC has substantially lower levels of trypsin inhibitors, lectins, and allergenic proteins compared to conventional soybean meal, making it suitable for sensitive animal populations.

Role in Animal Nutrition

SPC has become a standard ingredient in post-weaning piglet diets where soybean meal-related intestinal hypersensitivity and reduced feed intake are well-documented problems. Properly processed SPC provides similar protein value to soybean meal without the anti-nutritional and allergenic effects. In salmon and shrimp aquaculture, SPC is one of the primary plant proteins used to replace fishmeal at high inclusion rates. SPC also features in calf milk replacers and premium pet food products.
