What Is Lithium Carbonate?
Lithium carbonate (Li₂CO₃) is a white odourless powder that is sparingly soluble in water with a notable inverse temperature–solubility relationship (it becomes less soluble as temperature rises). It is the primary commercial form of lithium used as a feedstock for the production of other lithium chemicals, as a flux in ceramics and glass, and as the active pharmaceutical ingredient in bipolar disorder treatment. Global demand has surged with the expansion of lithium-ion battery manufacturing.
Ceramics, Glass & Frits
In the ceramics industry, lithium carbonate is a powerful flux that lowers the melting and firing temperatures of ceramic bodies and glazes, reducing energy consumption and improving mechanical strength. In glass manufacturing, lithium carbonate improves melt viscosity, thermal expansion characteristics, and chemical durability of specialty glass including heat-resistant glass, glass-ceramics, and TV panel glass. It is also an important component of frit formulations used in enamel coatings.
Lithium Chemical & Battery Precursor
Lithium carbonate is the starting material for the synthesis of lithium hydroxide, lithium chloride, lithium fluoride, lithium metal, and numerous lithium salts. In battery manufacturing, battery-grade lithium carbonate (≥99.5% Li₂CO₃) is a key precursor to cathode active materials for lithium-ion batteries, including lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) used in electric vehicles, grid storage, and consumer electronics.
Pharmaceutical & Specialty Applications
Pharmaceutical grade lithium carbonate is the active ingredient in medications prescribed for bipolar disorder and mania. In specialty applications, it is used in the manufacture of aluminium smelting electrolytes to reduce melting points and improve efficiency. It is also used in lubricating greases, air conditioning desiccants, and as a chemical reagent in research and quality control laboratories throughout Southern Africa.
