What is BHA?

Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA) is a synthetic phenolic antioxidant used to prevent lipid oxidation and rancidity in fats, oils, and fat-containing feed ingredients. It is a mixture of two isomers (2- and 3-BHA) and is effective at low concentrations (100–200 ppm in fats) due to its high chain-breaking antioxidant activity. BHA is approved for use in animal feed across major regulatory jurisdictions and is widely used in the rendering and pet food industries.

Role in Animal Nutrition

Rancid fats in animal feed are a significant quality and performance concern, as oxidised lipids reduce palatability, destroy fat-soluble vitamins, and can cause oxidative stress in consuming animals. BHA interrupts the free radical chain reaction of lipid peroxidation at the initiation stage, preserving fat quality throughout feed manufacturing, storage, and consumption. It synergises with BHT, propyl gallate, and citric acid for enhanced antioxidant protection. In pet food, fat oxidation directly impacts palatability and nutritional quality.
