What Is Powdery Emulsion Explosive?

Powdery emulsion explosive is a water-in-oil type emulsion explosive manufactured in a free-flowing granular or powder form that can be poured or gravity-loaded into blast holes. Unlike heavy ANFO (a simple ammonium nitrate/fuel oil blend), emulsion explosives encapsulate ammonium nitrate solution droplets within a continuous oil phase, creating a chemically stable matrix that is inherently water-resistant and provides more consistent energy output across varying hole conditions. The powdery form allows bag charging or direct pouring into blast holes without pumping equipment, making it suitable for operations where mechanised bulk loading systems are not available. Powdery emulsion is used as the primary blast charge in bench blasting in open-pit mining and quarrying, and in development headings and production stopes in underground mining operations.

Performance and Initiation

Powdery emulsion explosive provides higher energy density and more consistent detonation velocity than ANFO, particularly in smaller-diameter holes and under wet or humid conditions where ANFO performance degrades. It is initiated by standard commercial detonators (electric, non-electric shock tube, or electronic) and boosters for insensitive formulations. The relative weight strength (RWS) of emulsion explosives is typically 85–100% of ANFO on a weight basis, and higher on a volume basis due to the higher density of emulsion compared to poured ANFO. Coupling ratio (the ratio of explosive to hole volume) is important — emulsion explosives are denser than ANFO and generate higher borehole pressure when tightly coupled.

Supply and Regulatory Requirements

Powdery emulsion explosive is a Schedule 1 explosive under the Explosives Act (South Africa) and equivalent regulations across the region. Supply is restricted to licensed mining and blasting operations holding valid explosive licences and relevant end-user permits. Terracore Chemicals supplies powdery emulsion explosive to licensed mining operations in South Africa and the SADC region. All enquiries require explosives licence documentation and details of the delivery site and quantities required. Supply does not occur on a self-service basis — technical review and licence verification precede every order.

Applications

  • Bench blasting in open-pit mining and hard rock quarrying
  • Underground development heading and production stope blasting
  • Wet and moist blast hole applications where ANFO would be compromised
  • Bag-loading applications without mechanised bulk explosive trucks
  • Secondary breaking of oversized boulders (deck charges)
  • Construction rock excavation (licensed operations)
  • Coal mine blasting (where permitted and with appropriate fume class)
