What Is Rutin?

Rutin (quercetin-3-O-rutinoside, or sophorin) is a naturally occurring flavonoid glycoside found in many plants including buckwheat (a primary commercial source), citrus fruits, asparagus, and rue (Ruta graveolens, from which its name derives). It consists of the flavonol quercetin linked to the disaccharide rutinose. Rutin is a potent antioxidant — it scavenges free radicals (superoxide, hydroxyl, peroxyl) and chelates metal ions that catalyse oxidative reactions. It also has well-documented vascular-protective properties: it strengthens capillary walls by inhibiting the degradation of the endothelial extracellular matrix and promoting collagen biosynthesis in the vessel wall.

Cosmetic Skin Care Applications

In eye care and sensitive skin formulations, rutin is valued for its vascular-protective and anti-inflammatory actions. In under-eye dark circle treatment products, rutin targets the vascular component of dark circles — reducing microvascular permeability and fragility in the periorbital area and decreasing the leakage of red blood cells and their haemoglobin-derived pigments (the source of blue-purple discolouration) into the periorbital dermis. In anti-redness and rosacea-targeting skincare, rutin helps stabilise reactive capillaries and reduce the erythema (redness) associated with capillary fragility and inflammatory skin conditions. Combined with vitamin C (ascorbic acid), rutin potentiates vitamin C antioxidant action by regenerating the reduced (active) form of ascorbic acid.

Nutraceutical and Pharmaceutical Uses

Rutin is one of the most widely used nutraceutical phlebotonic (vascular-toning) agents, used in supplements targeting capillary fragility, varicose vein symptoms, chronic venous insufficiency, and haemorrhoid treatment. It is also used in pharmaceutical vasoprotective preparations. Terracore Chemicals supplies rutin in cosmetic and nutraceutical grades for personal care and supplement manufacturers.
