What Is a Seismic Electric Detonator?

A seismic electric detonator is an electric detonator specifically designed for seismic survey applications — the controlled detonation of a small explosive charge at depth in a shot hole to generate a seismic wave that is recorded by surface geophones for subsurface geological mapping. The seismic detonator is constructed with an anti-static bridgewire to prevent accidental initiation from static discharge, which is a significant hazard in geophysical survey environments where long leg wires trail across the ground and accumulate static charge. The water-resistant shell ensures reliable performance in wet shot holes, and the precise delay timing (for delay-series detonators) ensures consistent seismic pulse generation for accurate data interpretation.

Anti-Static and Safety Construction

Conventional electric detonators use a bridgewire (resistance wire) that ignites a pyrotechnic charge when sufficient current passes through it. The risk in seismic applications is that stray currents, static buildup on long leg wires, or radio frequency (RF) fields may inadvertently provide enough current to fire a standard bridgewire detonator. Anti-static seismic detonators incorporate a higher-resistance bridgewire and often a semi-conducting shunt across the leg wire terminals, which dissipates static charges harmlessly below the firing threshold. This construction makes seismic detonators significantly safer in RF-active or static-prone environments than standard electric detonators, while still firing reliably from the controlled current output of a seismic blasting machine.

Mining and Survey Applications

In mining environments, seismic electric detonators are used where the anti-static and water-resistant specifications of the seismic grade are beneficial for controlled blast initiation in underground or wet surface shot holes. They are specified in blast designs where stray current from mining equipment (electric drills, locomotives, conveyors) creates a stray current risk for standard electric detonators. Terracore Chemicals supplies seismic electric detonators to licensed mining operations and geophysical survey contractors in South Africa and the SADC region. Supply requires valid explosives licensing from the purchaser.
