Potassium Persulfate as a Polymerisation Initiator

Potassium persulfate (KPS) is the most widely used persulfate initiator for aqueous free-radical emulsion polymerisation. On decomposition above ~50 °C (or at lower temperature with a reducing agent redox co-initiator), it generates sulfate radical anions that initiate polymerisation in the aqueous phase. It is used in the manufacture of SBR latex for carpet backing, nitrile latex for gloves, and acrylic emulsions for paints. In personal care, potassium persulfate-based bleaching powders are the standard lightener for hair.

Storage and Supply

Potassium persulfate is an oxidiser that decomposes on heating, contamination with moisture, or contact with reducing agents. Terracore supplies in 25 kg PE-lined steel cans or fibre drums in air-conditioned, segregated oxidiser storage. COA reports assay (iodometric titration), moisture, and active oxygen content. SDS with oxidiser storage and fire-fighting requirements is provided.

Applications

  • Emulsion polymerisation initiator (SBR, NBR, acrylic latex)
  • Oxidative hair-bleaching and decolourisation
  • Printed circuit board micro-etching
  • Oxidative soil and groundwater remediation
  • Denim stone-wash substitute
  • Bleaching of starch and textile
