What is Casein?

Casein is the dominant protein in bovine milk, comprising approximately 80% of milk protein content. As a phosphoprotein, casein forms micelles in milk that coagulate slowly in the intestine, providing a sustained release of amino acids. It is available in acid casein form (insoluble) and as caseinate salts (sodium or calcium caseinate, water-soluble) for different application needs. Feed-grade casein has a superior amino acid profile and very high protein quality scores.

Role in Animal Nutrition

Casein has been the gold standard research protein in amino acid bioavailability studies due to its high digestibility and balanced amino acid profile. In young animal nutrition, casein-containing milk replacers for piglets, calves, and lambs provide highly digestible, slow-release protein that supports gut development without overwhelming the immature digestive system. Its curd-forming properties in the abomasum and stomach of neonates have physiological relevance in early life feeding programs.
