What Is Ammonium Bifluoride?

Ammonium Bifluoride (ammonium hydrogen difluoride, NH₄HF₂) is an inorganic fluoride salt produced by the partial neutralization of hydrofluoric acid with ammonia. It is a white crystalline solid that dissolves in water to release fluoride and bifluoride ions, giving moderately acidic solutions with significant fluoride activity. As a safer solid alternative to aqueous HF for many applications, it is widely used in glass etching, metal surface treatment, and as a fluoride source in industrial chemistry.

Glass Etching and Frosting

Ammonium Bifluoride is the principal reagent in decorative glass frosting and etching pastes. When applied to glass or dissolved in acidic aqueous solution, it reacts with the silicon dioxide network of glass to produce a uniform matte finish. Etching pastes based on ammonium bifluoride are used in architectural glass decoration, glassware finishing, and in the production of frosted lighting glass. It produces a finer, more uniform etch than hydrofluoric acid alone in many formulations.

Metal Pickling and Stainless Steel Treatment

In metal treatment, ammonium bifluoride is used as a fluoride-ion source in pickling baths for stainless steel, titanium, and nickel alloys. Mixed acid pickling solutions containing ammonium bifluoride and nitric acid are effective at removing heat tint, scale, and surface contamination from weld zones. It is also used in flux formulations for aluminum and magnesium brazing and welding.

Industrial and Chemical Applications

Ammonium Bifluoride serves as a fluoride source in the production of sodium fluoride, potassium fluoride, and other inorganic fluoride compounds. It is used as a wood preservative (fungicide), as a chemical intermediate, and as a cleaning agent for boiler and heat exchanger scale removal. In oil and gas well stimulation, fluoride-containing acid blends using ammonium bifluoride are used for sandstone matrix acidizing.
