What is Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)?
Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) is a water-soluble B-vitamin that functions as the core component of the flavin coenzymes FAD and FMN, which are essential for mitochondrial electron transport, fatty acid oxidation, and amino acid catabolism. Feed-grade riboflavin is available as pure crystalline powder or in a stabilised 80% coated form for better handling and pelleting resistance.
Role in Animal Nutrition
Riboflavin is essential for all animal species, but poultry are particularly susceptible to deficiency because they have limited capacity for riboflavin storage. The classic sign of riboflavin deficiency in broilers and turkeys is curled-toe paralysis (riboflavin deficiency syndrome), accompanied by poor growth, diarrhoea, and high chick mortality. In sows, riboflavin deficiency causes reproductive failure including early embryo death and small litter sizes. Aquaculture species also require dietary riboflavin supplementation.
