What Is Glycerin?
Glycerin (glycerol) is a trihydric alcohol produced as a co-product of biodiesel manufacturing and soap production. Crude glycerin contains 80–85% glycerol with residual methanol and salts; refined USP glycerin is 99.5%+ pure. Both grades are used in animal nutrition, with the choice depending on species sensitivity and quality requirements.
Energy Value and Palatability
Glycerin is an excellent energy source for livestock, with a metabolisable energy value similar to maize for swine and poultry. It is rapidly absorbed and gluconeogenic, supporting blood glucose during high-demand periods such as early lactation. Glycerin improves pellet quality in compound feeds and acts as a humectant that reduces dustiness and improves flow of powdered premixes.
Species Applications and Supply
Crude glycerin is commonly used in ruminant and swine diets; refined USP glycerin is preferred for poultry and aquafeed where methanol tolerance is lower. Terracore Chemicals supplies both grades in IBC containers and bulk tankers to South African feed producers and dairy cooperatives.
Applications
- Ruminant and dairy energy supplementation
- Swine grow-finish energy density enhancement
- Pellet quality and binding improvement
- Premix humectant and dustiness reducer
- Aquafeed energy source
- Companion animal diet palatability enhancement
