What Is Potassium Bicarbonate?

Potassium Bicarbonate (KHCO₃) is a white crystalline powder supplying 47% K₂O and having an alkaline reaction in solution. It is fully water-soluble and chloride-free, making it suitable for use in sensitive crop fertigation programs and in applications where soil or irrigation water acidification is not desired. Potassium bicarbonate is also a registered active ingredient for control of powdery mildew in several countries, giving it a dual role as both a fertilizer and a crop protection agent.

Potassium Bicarbonate in Fertigation

In fertigation systems, potassium bicarbonate provides a fast-dissolving source of potassium with a buffering effect on solution pH. When combined with acidic fertilizers such as phosphoric acid or monoammonium phosphate, it helps stabilise the pH of the nutrient solution in the root zone. For organic growers, it is one of the few high-analysis potassium sources compatible with organic certification standards. As a powdery mildew control agent, foliar sprays of 0.5–1% potassium bicarbonate solution have demonstrated efficacy in vine, cucumber, and rose programs.
