What Is Sulfamic Acid?
Sulfamic acid (amidosulfuric acid) is a stable, dry, white crystalline solid that dissolves in water to give a strongly acidic solution. Unlike hydrochloric or sulphuric acid, sulfamic acid is non-volatile, has low odour, is relatively safe to handle and transport as a solid, and is non-oxidising. These properties make it the preferred descaling acid for a wide range of equipment and surface types, particularly where the residual hazards of mineral acid fumes or spills are unacceptable.
Descaling and Cleaning Performance
Sulfamic acid is highly effective against calcium carbonate (limescale), calcium sulphate, and magnesium carbonate deposits that form on the heat transfer surfaces of boilers, plate heat exchangers, cooling towers, coffee machines, dishwashers, and reverse osmosis membranes. It reacts with calcium carbonate to form soluble calcium sulfamate salts that are easily rinsed away. Reaction is relatively slow compared to HCl, giving better metal compatibility and less risk of base metal attack.
Formulation and Supply
Sulfamic acid is incorporated at 5–30% in liquid and powder descaling formulas for domestic appliances (kettle and coffee machine descalers), industrial CIP descalers, and bathroom limescale removers. It is compatible with nonionic and cationic surfactants for one-step clean-and-descale formulations. Terracore Chemicals supplies technical-grade sulfamic acid in 25 kg bags for cleaning product manufacturers and industrial maintenance chemical suppliers across South Africa.
