What is Konjac Gum?
Konjac gum is derived from the dried and milled corm of the Amorphophallus konjac plant and consists predominantly of konjac glucomannan (KGM), a high-molecular-weight soluble polysaccharide with exceptional water-absorbing and viscosity-forming properties. It is one of the most viscous naturally occurring dietary fibres, forming dense gels in the gastrointestinal tract that slow gastric emptying and nutrient absorption significantly.
Role in Animal Nutrition
In companion animal nutrition, konjac glucomannan is valued for its role in weight management through satiety induction and caloric dilution, and for glycaemic management in diabetic dogs and cats through slowing of glucose absorption. Its fermentability supports intestinal microbiome health, and its gel-forming properties improve stool consistency and quality. In functional pet foods, konjac also serves as a natural texturiser in wet and semi-moist formulations, replacing synthetic hydrocolloids.
