What Is Salicyl Hydroximic Acid?
Salicyl hydroximic acid (SHA, 2-hydroxybenzene hydroxamic acid) is an aromatic hydroxamic acid collector containing a phenol (salicyl) group ortho to the hydroxamic acid functional group. The phenol moiety participates in additional hydrogen bonding and chelation interactions at mineral surfaces, giving SHA strong affinity for metal-rich oxide mineral surfaces. SHA has been extensively studied as a collector for REE minerals, tungstates, and transition metal oxides, and is recognised for its high selectivity from quartz and other silicate gangue under appropriate pH conditions.
REE Mineral and Oxide Flotation
SHA shows particularly strong collecting activity for rare earth element minerals (monazite, bastnäsite, xenotime) and for cassiterite (tin), wolframite, and columbite-tantalite, making it relevant to both conventional mineral processing and the emerging REE recovery sector. The ortho-phenol group in the salicyl moiety is believed to form particularly stable bidentate chelate complexes with lanthanide and heavy metal cations at mineral surfaces. SHA is used alone or in combination with alkyl hydroximic acid collectors to tailor selectivity across complex REE-bearing ores.
Supply Details
Terracore Chemicals supplies salicyl hydroximic acid as a technical-grade crystalline powder in 25 kg bags. We advise on conditioning protocols for effective use (pH, temperature, collector concentration) and on blending strategies with other oxide mineral collectors.
