What is Pea Protein?
Pea protein concentrate is derived from yellow split peas through a wet fractionation process that removes starch and fibre to concentrate the protein content to 80% or higher. It provides a near-complete amino acid profile with high digestibility and is naturally free of major allergens compared to soy. Its low anti-nutritional factor content — minimal trypsin inhibitors and lectins after processing — makes it suitable for sensitive animal populations including young pigs and fish larvae.
Role in Animal Nutrition
Pea protein is recognised as a premium plant protein ingredient with digestibility values comparable to soybean meal. In poultry diets, it can partially or fully replace soybean meal in formulations targeting allergen reduction or GMO-free positioning. In swine, pea protein is particularly valued in piglet diets where it provides digestible protein without the soy allergenic factors that can cause post-weaning intestinal hypersensitivity. In aquaculture, its amino acid balance supports partial fishmeal replacement.
