What is BHT?

Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT) is a synthetic phenolic antioxidant widely used in food, feed, and industrial applications to prevent lipid oxidation and rancidity. It functions as a chain-breaking antioxidant by donating hydrogen atoms to lipid peroxy radicals, terminating the oxidative chain reaction. Feed-grade BHT is a white or off-white crystalline solid that is highly fat-soluble and effective at concentrations of 100–200 ppm in fat-containing feed systems.

Role in Animal Nutrition

BHT is one of the most effective individual antioxidants for protecting feed fats and oils from rancidity during storage and processing. In compound feeds containing rendered fats, fish oils, or vegetable oils, BHT inclusion prevents oxidative degradation that would otherwise reduce energy value, palatability, and fat-soluble vitamin content. BHT synergises with BHA and with chelating agents such as citric acid, allowing effective antioxidant protection at lower concentrations of each individual component. In pet food, BHT preserves the sensory quality and nutritional integrity of the fat fraction.
