Maleic Acid in Resins and Chemical Manufacturing
Maleic acid is the cis isomer of butenedioic acid. It is a key co-monomer in unsaturated polyester resins, contributing unsaturation for free-radical crosslinking alongside saturated diacids like phthalic anhydride or isophthalic acid. Industrial quantities of maleic acid are also isomerised to fumaric acid (its trans isomer), which has applications in food acidification and UPR. Both acids are precursors to malic acid via enzymatic or chemical hydration.
Packaging and Availability
Maleic acid is supplied in 25 kg woven polypropylene bags. Terracore maintains stock from multiple origins for supply reliability. COA reports purity (HPLC or acid-base titration), melting point, and heavy metals. SDS is provided.
Applications
- Unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) production
- Fumaric acid isomerisation feedstock
- Food acidulant (E296) — regulated use
- Malic acid synthesis
- Agrochemical and herbicide synthesis
- Lubricant additive
