THT as a Gas Odorant
Tetrahydrothiophene is the primary odorant added to natural gas and LPG distribution networks in many countries, including , to enable detection of otherwise odourless gas leaks. Even at concentrations of a few parts per million it produces a distinctive sulfurous odour detectable by the human nose, providing an effective safety warning. Its chemical stability and low reactivity make it ideal for long-term retention in gas pipelines.
Supply and Handling
Terracore supplies THT in small quantities for laboratory and calibration applications, and in bulk for gas-network odorant dosing systems. All shipments include COA confirming purity and water content, and full TDG and SDS documentation.
Applications
- Natural gas odorant (primary application)
- Pharmaceutical and lab synthesis reagent
- Organic sulfur chemistry intermediate
- Solvent in specialty processes
- Detection threshold testing
- Electronic-grade cleaning
