What Is a High-Precision Shock Tube Detonator?

A high-precision shock tube detonator (non-electric detonator) uses a length of shock tube (hollow plastic tube with a reactive inner coating) to transmit an initiation signal from the surface to the detonator without any electrical connection. The shock tube transmits a low-energy signal at approximately 2,000 m/s (depending on tube type) that initiates the detonator’s pyrotechnic delay element on arrival, after which the detonator fires after the specified delay. The high-precision grade uses tighter-tolerance pyrotechnic delay elements than standard shock tube detonators, achieving ±2–3 ms timing accuracy versus ±10–15% for standard grades. This improved timing accuracy makes the high-precision detonator suitable for vibration-controlled blast designs where exact inter-hole timing is critical to stay within regulatory PPV limits.

Stray Current Immunity and Safety Advantages

Shock tube detonators have no electrical connection between the initiation point and the detonator — the shock tube carries a non-electrical signal. This makes them completely immune to stray current hazards from mining equipment, electrified rail, or lightning, which is a fundamental safety advantage in underground environments with DC electrified haulage and in surface environments with the risk of lightning during long-duration blast tie-in operations. Unlike electric detonator circuits (which must be tested, cleared, and protected from inadvertent current), shock tube circuits can be assembled and tied in without the same stray current management regime. Application in Blasting Operations
