What Is an Industry Electric Detonator?
The industry electric detonator is the standard commercial electric initiator for general surface and underground mining and blasting use. It consists of an aluminium or copper shell containing a bridgewire assembly, a primary explosive charge (initiating charge), and a base explosive charge (PETN), with two insulated leg wires for electrical connection to the blasting circuit. When the detonator is connected in series with other detonators and a blasting machine provides sufficient current through the circuit, the bridgewire heats and ignites the pyrotechnic charge, which initiates the detonator after a pyrotechnic delay element burns for the specified delay period. The industry detonator is produced in instantaneous, short-period (millisecond delay), and long-period (half-second delay) series to allow blasting engineers to design blast sequences that control vibration, flyrock, and muck pile displacement.
Delay Series and Blast Design
Electric detonators are manufactured in numbered delay series — each delay number corresponds to a specific pyrotechnic delay period (the time between energising the circuit and the detonator firing). Short-period delays (SP) typically increment in 25 ms steps and are used for surface bench blasting where fast inter-hole timing controls fragmentation and muck pile shape. Long-period delays (LP) increment in 500 ms steps and are used in underground development and production blasting where vibration control and hole sequencing require longer timing intervals. Instantaneous detonators (#0 or #00) fire with minimal delay and are used as the initiating element in surface detonating cord circuits or where simultaneous initiation of all holes is required. The blasting engineer designs the blast circuit using appropriate delay numbers to achieve target fragmentation, vibration limits, and heave characteristics.
Electric Circuit Design and Safety
Industry electric detonators are connected in series in the blast circuit — each detonator leg wire is spliced in series with the next, and the complete circuit is tested with a blasting galvanometer before connecting to the blasting machine. The circuit must pass a continuity and resistance check before firing to confirm all detonators are properly connected. Terracore Chemicals supplies industry electric detonators in instantaneous, SP, and LP delay series to licensed mining and blasting operations in South Africa and the SADC region. Supply requires valid explosives licensing from the purchaser.
