Propargyl Alcohol Corrosion Inhibitor Supplier
A highly effective corrosion inhibitor for steel in acidic environments — propargyl alcohol adsorbs strongly on steel surfaces in HCl, H₂SO₄, and phosphoric acid, significantly reducing corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement during acid cleaning and pickling.

What Is Propargyl Alcohol?
Propargyl alcohol (2-propyn-1-ol, PA) is a low-molecular-weight organic compound with a terminal alkyne group (C≡C-H) and a hydroxyl group (−OH). It is a clear, mobile, flammable liquid with a pungent odour. In corrosion inhibitor chemistry, propargyl alcohol is used as a highly effective steel corrosion inhibitor in acidic media — particularly in hydrochloric acid (HCl) pickling, sulfuric acid descaling, and phosphoric acid cleaning solutions. Propargyl alcohol’s mechanism is adsorption: the triple bond (alkyne group) undergoes catalytic interaction with the iron surface and promotes adsorption of the organic molecule, forming a protective organic film on the metal surface that blocks acid attack and reduces corrosion rate. It also reduces hydrogen embrittlement of high-strength steel during acid exposure.
Acid Pickling and Scale Removal Applications
Acid pickling and descaling (cleaning with HCl or H₂SO₄ to remove rust, mill scale, calcium carbonate scale, or iron oxide deposits from steel surfaces) exposes the base metal to a strongly corrosive acid environment. Without a corrosion inhibitor, acid attack on the clean steel surface (under-scale) is severe and causes metal loss, hydrogen embrittlement, and surface roughening. Propargyl alcohol, dosed at 0.1–1.0% (1–10 g/L) in the acid bath, dramatically reduces the steel corrosion rate (inhibition efficiency 90–99% in 15% HCl at 30–80°C, depending on dose and temperature) while allowing the acid to dissolve scale and deposits. It is compatible with other acid pickling inhibitor components (iodide ions, surfactants, heteroatom-containing compounds) in formulated pickling inhibitor products.
Oilfield and Industrial Cleaning Applications
In oilfield operations, propargyl alcohol is used in well stimulation acid inhibitor formulations (HCl matrix acidising, acid fracturing) to protect steel tubulars and wellhead equipment from the high-concentration HCl used in carbonate formation stimulation. Oilfield acid inhibitor requirements are demanding — inhibition must remain effective at temperatures up to 120–150°C under high HCl concentrations (15–28%) and high pressures. Propargyl alcohol forms the backbone of many commercial acid inhibitor formulations, combined with filmed amines, nitrogen-bearing heterocycles, and intensifier compounds (iodide, cinnamaldehyde) for high-temperature extension. In industrial heat exchanger cleaning and chemical cleaning of process equipment, propargyl alcohol protects steel surfaces during HCl or citric acid cleaning operations. Terracore Chemicals supplies propargyl alcohol in 25 kg and 200 kg drums under flammable liquid classification.
