What Is TCCA?

Trichloroisocyanuric acid (TCCA, trichloroisocyanurate) is a chlorinated isocyanurate compound that provides approximately 90% available chlorine by weight — the highest available chlorine content of any commercial solid chlorine sanitiser. TCCA dissolves slowly in water, releasing hypochlorous acid (HOCl) and cyanuric acid (CYA). The cyanuric acid released acts as a chlorine stabiliser (sunlight UV blocker), significantly slowing the UV degradation of hypochlorous acid in open-air swimming pools and dramatically reducing chlorine consumption versus unstabilised chlorine (calcium hypochlorite, liquid chlorine). TCCA is the most concentrated and widely used solid chlorine sanitiser for outdoor swimming pools.

Swimming Pool Sanitation

TCCA granules are added directly to pool water or through a pool skimmer, where they dissolve to release available chlorine. The simultaneous release of cyanuric acid stabiliser maintains a residual CYA concentration of 30–50 mg/L in pool water — the recommended range for effective UV protection of pool chlorine in outdoor pools. At this CYA level, pool chlorine consumption from UV is reduced by ~90% compared to unstabilised chlorine. TCCA granules also provide rapid chlorination for shock treatment of pool water when needed. The low dissolution pH (~3) of TCCA moderates pH rise in pool water, reducing acid (hydrochloric acid) demand compared to sodium hypochlorite.
