What Is Caffeine Anhydrous?

Caffeine (1,3,7-trimethylxanthine) is the world’s most widely consumed psychoactive substance — a xanthine alkaloid naturally present in coffee, tea, cacao, guarana, and many other plants. Caffeine anhydrous (CAF) is the pure, water-free form of caffeine, supplied as a white crystalline powder with ≥99% purity. Its main mechanism of action is competitive antagonism of adenosine receptors (A1 and A2A) in the central nervous system, blocking the inhibitory effects of adenosine and producing CNS stimulation, increased alertness, and delayed fatigue onset. In peripheral tissues, caffeine also inhibits phosphodiesterase (PDE) enzymes, elevating cyclic AMP (cAMP) levels in cells.

Cosmetic Skin and Eye Care Applications

In cosmetic formulations, caffeine’s PDE inhibition mechanism is exploited in under-eye de-puffing products, cellulite and body contouring creams, and scalp energising hair care. In eye cream and gel formulations, caffeine at 1–5% reduces periorbital oedema (eye puffiness) by promoting vasoconstriction and stimulating microcirculation and lymphatic drainage in the thin, fragile periorbital skin. In anti-cellulite body creams and serums, caffeine supports lipolysis (fat cell breakdown) in adipose tissue by inhibiting PDE and elevating cAMP — the intracellular signal that activates lipase enzymes. In scalp care, caffeine is reported to stimulate hair follicle proliferation and is used in scalp tonics marketed for hair thinning.

Nutraceutical and Pharmaceutical Uses

Caffeine anhydrous is the active ingredient in most pre-workout supplements, energy shots, and alertness/focus supplement products, where it is combined with amino acids, vitamins, and other performance-supporting ingredients. In pharmaceutical preparations, caffeine is used as a CNS stimulant in combination analgesics (enhancing the effect of aspirin and paracetamol), in neonatal apnea treatment (caffeine citrate injection), and as a headache treatment ingredient. Terracore Chemicals supplies caffeine anhydrous in cosmetic, nutraceutical, and pharmaceutical grades.
