What Is Dipropylene Glycol?

Dipropylene glycol (DPG) is a mixture of three isomeric diols derived from propylene oxide: 4-oxa-2,6-heptanediol is the predominant isomer, accompanied by minor proportions of the 1,1′- and 2,2′-isomers. It is produced as a by-product of propylene glycol manufacture. DPG is a colourless, odourless, hygroscopic liquid with very low volatility, high flash point (~124°C), and full miscibility with water, ethanol, and most polar solvents. Its low evaporation rate and pleasant non-irritating character distinguish it from volatile solvents like IPA.

Fragrance Carrier and Cleaning Uses

DPG is one of the most widely used fragrance carrier and diluent solvents in perfumery and personal care, where its low volatility, safety profile, and compatibility with fragrance materials make it the preferred alternative to ethanol for producing oil-in-water fragrance concentrates and perfume bases. In cleaning product formulation, DPG serves as a high-boiling coupling agent and co-solvent, particularly in products where slow solvent release and extended surface contact time are beneficial. It is also used as a plasticiser in printing inks and adhesives, and as a chemical intermediate in polyurethane and polyester resin synthesis.

Supply and Packaging

Terracore Chemicals supplies technical- and fragrance-grade DPG in drums and IBCs to fragrance blenders, cleaning product manufacturers, and industrial formulators. Fragrance grade meets additional colour and odour specifications required by perfumery applications.

Applications

  • Fragrance carrier and diluent in perfumery and personal care
  • Cleaning product co-solvent and coupling agent
  • Polyurethane polyol and resin intermediate
  • Printing ink and adhesive plasticiser
  • Textile processing auxiliary and lubricant
  • Low-volatility humectant in industrial formulations
