What Is Butyldiglycol Acetate?
Butyldiglycol acetate (BDGA), also known as diethylene glycol butyl ether acetate (DGBA), is the acetate ester of butyldiglycol. The ester linkage significantly reduces its water solubility compared to BDG and raises its flash point to ~116°C, classifying it as a combustible liquid rather than a flammable one. BDGA has one of the lowest evaporation rates of the commercial glycol ether esters (~0.01 relative to n-butyl acetate = 1), making it a strong retarder solvent that extends open time in coating systems and provides a durable, slow-release solvency effect in specialty cleaning applications.
Coatings and Cleaning Applications
In solvent-borne and high-solids coatings, BDGA is used as a retarder to prevent surface defects (blushing, cratering, orange peel) caused by too-rapid solvent evaporation. It is particularly effective in industrial and automotive refinish coatings. In specialty cleaning, BDGA is a powerful high-solvency co-solvent for resin, adhesive, ink, and polymer residue removal from industrial equipment, printing machinery, and coating plant. Its high flash point (compared to ketones and esters typically used for such cleaning) makes it a safer choice in environments where flash point compliance is important.
Supply Details
Terracore Chemicals supplies technical-grade BDGA in drums. We advise on its use in retarder blends for specific coating systems and on its handling requirements (combustible rather than flammable classification, but still requiring appropriate ventilation and PPE).
Applications
- Coatings retarder solvent preventing surface defects
- Industrial and automotive refinish solvent blend component
- Resin, adhesive, and ink residue removal in plant cleaning
- Printing machine and screen cleaning solvent
