What Is Tetrapotassium Pyrophosphate?

Tetrapotassium pyrophosphate (TKPP) is the potassium salt of pyrophosphoric acid (diphosphoric acid), containing four potassium cations and the P₂O₇⁴⁻ pyrophosphate anion. It is the potassium analogue of tetrasodium pyrophosphate (TSPP), and shares its builder and dispersant functions but offers significantly higher aqueous solubility (~185 g/L vs ~30 g/L for TSPP at 25°C). This makes TKPP the preferred pyrophosphate builder for liquid detergent and liquid cleaning product formulations, where the low solubility of TSPP would cause precipitation or instability.

Cleaning Functions

TKPP functions as a chelating agent that sequesters calcium and magnesium ions in wash water, preventing their precipitation with anionic surfactants and maintaining surfactant efficiency in hard water conditions. It also disperses and peptises clay, protein, and pigment soils in the wash liquor. In liquid hand dishwash products, TKPP improves soil suspension and hard water tolerance. In industrial liquid degreasers and alkaline cleaners, it contributes both builder activity and mild alkalinity. TKPP is also used in the dairy and food processing industry as a sequestrant in equipment CIP formulations.
