What Is Coconut Fatty Acid?
Coconut fatty acid (CFA) is the fatty acid fraction obtained by hydrolysis of refined coconut oil, yielding a mixture of saturated and short-chain fatty acids dominated by lauric acid (C12, ~45%) and myristic acid (C14, ~18%). This unique chain length profile — predominantly medium-chain saturated fatty acids — gives CFA its characteristic rapid saponification, dense foam formation, and good rinsability when converted to soap or surfactant derivatives.
Role in Soap and Surfactant Manufacture
CFA is the starting material for manufacturing potassium cocoate (liquid soap), cocamide DEA (foam booster), cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB, mild amphoteric surfactant), and various other coconut-derived surfactant and conditioning actives. Direct saponification with NaOH produces sodium cocoate — the hard soap form — and with KOH produces the soft soap form. These soap bases are used in bar soap, syndet bars, liquid hand soap concentrates, and industrial cleaning products.
Supply and Applications
Terracore Chemicals supplies refined coconut fatty acid in drums and IBCs for soap manufacturers, surfactant producers, and oleochemical formulators. We can advise on saponification values, titration for precise NaOH/KOH dosing, and quality parameters relevant to specific soap formulations.
Applications
- Soap and syndet bar manufacturing base
- Potassium cocoate and liquid soap production
- Cocamide DEA and foam booster synthesis
- CAPB amphoteric surfactant intermediate
- Fatty acid amine and amide derivative production
- Industrial cleaning bar soap and mechanic soap
