What Is Diethanolamine?
Diethanolamine (DEA) is a secondary alkanolamine containing both hydroxyl and amine functional groups, giving it the dual character of a base and a reactive chemical intermediate. It is miscible with water, many alcohols, and glycols. In cleaning product formulation DEA serves as a pH adjuster and neutralising agent, and as the diethanolamine component in the synthesis of alkanolamides (such as cocamide DEA) used as foam boosters and viscosity builders.
pH Adjustment and Formulation Role
DEA is commonly used to adjust the pH of aqueous cleaning formulations, personal care products, and industrial emulsions to the alkaline range (pH 8–10) where anionic surfactants perform best and where certain actives such as optical brighteners and enzymes have optimal stability. Unlike inorganic alkalis, alkanolamine pH adjusters contribute a mild buffering capacity and improved skin feel. DEA is also used to neutralise fatty acids, sulfonic acids, and other acid intermediates in continuous on-site formulation processes.
Supply and Safety Notes
DEA is a suspected endocrine disruptor and is regulated in cosmetic products in the EU; formulators should check the current permitted levels before using DEA or DEA-based actives in personal care products. In industrial cleaning applications current EU REACH restrictions do not prohibit its use. Terracore Chemicals supplies technical-grade DEA in drums and IBCs and can provide Safety Data Sheets and regulatory guidance.
