What Is Sorbitol?

Sorbitol is a six-carbon sugar alcohol (polyol) produced by reduction of glucose, naturally occurring in fruits such as pears, apples, and cherries. It is approximately 60% as sweet as sucrose and provides a mild cooling sensation. In animal nutrition it functions primarily as a humectant, palatability enhancer, and texturiser in soft moist feeds, treats, and liquid supplements for companion animals and livestock.

Functional Properties in Feed

As a humectant, sorbitol retains moisture in soft-moist pet foods, chews, and semi-moist cattle blocks, extending shelf life and maintaining a palatable texture without the risk of spoilage associated with water activity. Its mild sweetness improves voluntary intake of medicated feeds, mineral licks, and electrolyte solutions in young animals — particularly weaned piglets and calves that have a strong preference for sweet tastes.

Osmotic and Veterinary Applications

Sorbitol 70% solution has osmotic laxative properties when used at therapeutic doses in veterinary practice and is an approved excipient in oral veterinary preparations.
