What Is Maltodextrin?
Maltodextrin is a partially hydrolysed starch polymer produced by enzymatic hydrolysis of maize or tapioca starch. With a dextrose equivalent (DE) of 10–20, it sits between native starch and dextrose in terms of chain length and sweetness. Its combination of high water solubility, bland taste, and film-forming properties makes it an extremely versatile carrier and functional ingredient in feed manufacturing.
Carrier and Encapsulation Functions
Maltodextrin is the most widely used carrier in spray-dried microencapsulation of probiotics, enzymes, vitamins, and essential oils. The matrix forms a protective shell around sensitive active ingredients, shielding them from heat, moisture, and oxidation during pelleting and storage. In liquid supplements and electrolyte powders, maltodextrin provides a rapidly soluble energy source alongside electrolytes.
Feed and Premix Applications
As a diluent in vitamin and mineral premixes, maltodextrin provides a consistent, low-density powder base that flows freely and is compatible with most active ingredients. Its mild sweetness can also improve voluntary intake of medicated feeds or supplements in piglets and calves. Terracore Chemicals supplies food- and feed-grade maltodextrin from non-GMO maize and tapioca sources in 25 kg bags.
