What Is Astaxanthin?

Astaxanthin is a xanthophyll carotenoid pigment responsible for the characteristic pink-red colouration of salmon, trout, shrimp, and flamingos. Unlike beta-carotene, astaxanthin possesses a unique molecular structure with polar end groups that anchor it across cell membranes, giving it exceptionally potent antioxidant activity — estimated at 10× vitamin E and 1000× vitamin C.

Role in Aquaculture and Poultry

In salmonid aquaculture astaxanthin is an essential feed ingredient: fish cannot synthesise carotenoids de novo and rely entirely on dietary supply for flesh and skin pigmentation. Consumer perception of wild-like pink flesh is a primary value driver in farmed salmon and trout markets. In poultry astaxanthin enhances egg yolk colouration and provides oxidative protection to the egg lipid fraction.

Supply and Inclusion

Terracore Chemicals supplies synthetic astaxanthin on silica or starch carriers at 2.5%, 5%, and 10% active concentrations, as well as natural astaxanthin from Haematococcus pluvialis. Both forms are effective; synthetic material provides consistent purity. We advise aquafeed producers on inclusion rates to achieve target pigmentation scores (SalmoFan® levels) economically.

Applications

  • Atlantic salmon flesh pigmentation
  • Rainbow trout colour development
  • Shrimp and crustacean pigmentation
  • Egg yolk colour in poultry diets
  • Antioxidant protection in high-fat aquafeeds
  • Pet food colour enhancement
