What Is Monopropylene Glycol?
Monopropylene glycol (MPG) is a synthetic diol manufactured from propylene oxide. USP/EP grade MPG is widely recognised as safe (GRAS) for use in food, feed, and pharmaceuticals. In animal nutrition its primary role is as a gluconeogenic precursor for dairy cows, rapidly converting to glucose in the liver and preventing the metabolic ketosis that afflicts high-producing cows after calving.
Dairy Cow Ketosis Management
Negative energy balance in the periparturient period drives rapid mobilisation of body fat, leading to ketosis. Drench-dosing MPG at 300–500 mL per cow per day during the transition period restores hepatic gluconeogenesis, reduces subclinical ketosis incidence, and improves milk production in early lactation. MPG is better tolerated and more palatable than propylene glycol derived from non-USP sources.
Other Feed and Industrial Applications
Beyond dairy, USP MPG serves as a humectant and carrier solvent in liquid vitamin and mineral supplements, a preservative in wet feeds, and an anti-freeze agent in water lines. Terracore Chemicals supplies drum and IBC quantities of USP-grade MPG to dairy cooperatives, feed manufacturers, and veterinary product formulators across South Africa.
