What is Sodium Sulphate?
Sodium sulphate (anhydrous, Na₂SO₄) is an inorganic sodium salt providing both sodium and sulphate to animal diets. It is a white, odourless crystalline powder that is freely soluble in water. The anhydrous (calcined) form is the most stable and preferred form for feed applications, as the decahydrate (Glauber’s salt) is hygroscopic and can cake in storage. Sodium sulphate is approved as a feed additive for multiple species as a source of sodium and sulphate.
Role in Animal Nutrition
In ruminant nutrition, sodium sulphate provides dietary sulphate, which is required for microbial protein synthesis in the rumen (sulphur-containing amino acids) and for the metabolism of certain glucosinolates and sulphur compounds in feedstuffs. It is used in mild laxative preparations for cattle and horses to support intestinal motility and manage mild constipation. Sodium sulphate also contributes to sodium balance in electrolyte formulations. In feed, sulphate provides the sulphur required for feather keratinisation and wool growth in sheep and poultry.
