TBHQ (Tert-Butylhydroquinone) Feed Grade Supplier South Africa

What is TBHQ?

Tert-Butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) is a synthetic monohydric phenol antioxidant widely used in the food and feed industries for its exceptional efficacy in stabilising vegetable oils, fats, and marine lipids against oxidative rancidity. TBHQ is highly effective at very low concentrations (100–200 ppm), making it one of the most efficient antioxidants on a cost-per-protection basis. It is particularly effective in polyunsaturated fat systems including fish oils and soybean oil.

Role in Animal Nutrition

TBHQ provides superior antioxidant protection in feed applications involving highly unsaturated fats and oils that are prone to rapid oxidative deterioration. In fish oil and fish-based ingredient preservation, TBHQ provides oxidative stability that maintains EPA and DHA omega-3 content, prevents rancid off-flavours, and protects fat-soluble vitamins. In vegetable oil-containing feeds, TBHQ prevents the development of peroxide and secondary oxidation products that reduce palatability and nutritional value. Its use in fat blends for compound feed production is widespread in markets where TBHQ is approved as a feed additive.
