What is Sorbic Acid?

Sorbic acid (2,4-hexadienoic acid) is a naturally occurring polyunsaturated fatty acid found in rowanberries, and is one of the most widely used antifungal food and feed preservatives. It is available as a white powder or granule and acts by penetrating fungal cell membranes and inhibiting decarboxylase enzymes essential for fungal metabolic activity. Sorbic acid is effective primarily against moulds and yeasts at pH values up to 6.5, with its potassium salt (potassium sorbate) preferred in applications requiring water solubility.

Sorbic acid provides effective antifungal protection in compound feed, pet food, and grain storage, particularly in warm and humid conditions prevalent in southern Africa where mould growth and mycotoxin formation are significant production and food safety risks.
