What is Sodium Erythorbate?

Sodium erythorbate is the sodium salt of erythorbic acid (D-isoascorbic acid), a stereoisomer of vitamin C. As a water-soluble antioxidant, sodium erythorbate is widely used in the food industry for meat preservation, preventing myoglobin oxidation and maintaining fresh red colour. In feed applications, it provides oxygen-scavenging and antioxidant activity for protecting meat-derived ingredients and lipid fractions from oxidative deterioration, offering better water solubility than erythorbic acid itself.

Role in Animal Nutrition

In pet food manufacturing, sodium erythorbate is used to maintain the colour and oxidative stability of fresh and dehydrated meat ingredients during processing and storage, reducing browning and off-flavour development that reduce palatability. In processed meat-based pet food and pet treats, it functions synergistically with other antioxidants to extend product shelf life. In rendered animal by-products and meat meals, sodium erythorbate can be applied in aqueous solution to limit surface oxidation. Its water solubility makes it particularly suitable for liquid spray applications in feed manufacturing.
