What is Malic Acid?
Malic acid is a naturally occurring dicarboxylic acid that serves as an intermediate in the Krebs cycle. The L-form (L-malic acid) is the biologically active form found in apple juice and many fruits, where it contributes characteristic tartness and flavour. Feed-grade malic acid is a white crystalline powder or granule with a clean, tart taste and is approved for use in animal feed as an acidifier and flavouring substance.
Role in Animal Nutrition
In ruminant nutrition, malic acid has been shown to act as a rumen fermentation modifier, stimulating the growth of Selenomonas ruminantium and promoting propionic acid production, which improves energy efficiency and reduces the risk of lactic acidosis in high-grain diets. This makes malic acid a valuable ingredient in transition cow diets and high-concentrate beef finishing programs. In monogastric nutrition, malic acid serves as an acidifier and flavour enhancer improving palatability. During heat stress, its role in the Krebs cycle energy pathway supports cellular energy metabolism.
