What is Sodium Benzoate?
Sodium benzoate is the sodium salt of benzoic acid, widely used as a food and feed preservative due to its excellent water solubility and broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. In solution and in the acidic environment of the stomach, sodium benzoate releases biologically active benzoic acid, which inhibits growth of moulds, yeasts, and some bacteria through disruption of cell membrane transport and internal acidification of microbial cells.
Role in Animal Nutrition
Sodium benzoate is approved as a feed additive in many jurisdictions and has been shown to have specific benefits in swine nutrition beyond its preservative function. In the acidic gastric environment, benzoic acid exerts antimicrobial activity against key enteric pathogens. Research in growing pigs has demonstrated improved growth performance and reduced E. coli counts with benzoic acid supplementation, leading to its authorisation as a feed additive in several markets. In pet food, sodium benzoate provides water-soluble preservation in moist and liquid formulations.
