What is Ascorbic Acid?

Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) is a water-soluble antioxidant vitamin that most animal species can synthesise endogenously, but supplementation provides significant benefits under conditions of physiological stress, rapid growth, disease challenge, or heat load. Feed-grade ascorbic acid is available as pure L-ascorbic acid or in stabilised coated forms (ascorbyl monophosphate, ascorbyl polyphosphate) that resist degradation during feed pelleting and storage.

Role in Animal Nutrition

Under heat stress conditions, broilers and layers have well-documented vitamin C requirements that exceed endogenous synthesis capacity, resulting in immunosuppression and reduced production. Supplemental ascorbic acid during heat waves significantly reduces mortality, maintains egg production, and supports eggshell quality. In aquaculture, vitamin C is a dietary requirement for fish species that cannot synthesise it, being essential for collagen synthesis, bone mineralisation, and immune function. Ascorbic acid also synergises with vitamin E as an antioxidant system in cell membranes.
