What is Folic Acid (Vitamin B9)?

Folic acid (pteroylmonoglutamic acid) is the synthetic and stable form of folate (Vitamin B9) used in animal feed supplementation. As a coenzyme in one-carbon metabolism, folate is essential for purine and pyrimidine synthesis (and hence DNA and RNA replication), and for remethylation of homocysteine to methionine. Feed-grade folic acid is a bright yellow crystalline powder that is sensitive to light and heat, typically supplied in opaque packaging.

Role in Animal Nutrition

Folic acid supplementation has demonstrated clear benefits in sow reproductive performance, including increased litter size, improved embryo survival, and reduced early gestation losses. In broiler breeders and turkey breeders, folate insufficiency reduces hatchability and embryo survival. In rapidly growing animals, folic acid is critical because cell proliferation requires DNA replication, and folate deficiency results in megaloblastic anaemia and impaired immune cell production. B12-folate interactions must also be considered in diet formulation.
