What is Biotin?
Biotin, also known as Vitamin B7 or Vitamin H, is a water-soluble B-vitamin that functions as an essential cofactor for carboxylase enzymes involved in fatty acid synthesis, gluconeogenesis, and amino acid catabolism. Feed-grade biotin is supplied in diluted forms (1% or 2% d-Biotin on a carrier) to facilitate accurate metering and blending in premix and feed mill operations.
Role in Animal Nutrition
Biotin is best known in swine and dairy cattle nutrition for its role in hoof horn formation and integrity. Biotin deficiency is associated with cracked and soft hooves, lameness, and reduced production performance in sows and dairy cows. In broilers, biotin supports normal feathering and skin development and its deficiency causes dermatitis and poor feather cover. In layers, biotin contributes to eggshell quality and productive longevity.
