What Is Ammonium Chloride?

Ammonium Chloride (NH₄Cl) is a white crystalline salt containing 26% nitrogen and 66% chloride. As a fertilizer, it is the primary nitrogen carrier used in paddy rice production in Asia, where the chloride content is beneficial for suppressing soil pathogens and the ammonium nitrogen is suited to flooded soil conditions. In dryland agriculture, its high chloride content limits its use to chloride-tolerant crops and soils where chloride accumulation is not a concern.

Ammonium Chloride in Fertilizer Programs

In South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa, ammonium chloride is used in specific fertilizer manufacturing programs and in crop programs where chloride is a desired secondary nutrient. Coconut palms, oil palms, and sugar cane have significant chloride requirements, and ammonium chloride can supply both N and Cl in a single product. It is also used in soil acidification programs on high-pH soils where its reaction with soil carbonates helps lower pH over time. The ammonium form of nitrogen in ammonium chloride is less susceptible to leaching than nitrate nitrogen, making it suitable for sandy soils in high-rainfall conditions.
