What Is Magnesium Chloride?
Magnesium Chloride (MgCl₂·6H₂O) is a highly soluble magnesium salt available as hygroscopic flakes or crystals. It contains approximately 15% MgO and is one of the most water-soluble magnesium sources available. While magnesium sulphate is the primary agricultural magnesium fertilizer, magnesium chloride is used where cost, availability, or specific chloride-tolerance allows its application. It is also extensively used in industrial and civil applications for dust suppression and de-icing.
Magnesium Chloride in Agriculture
In agriculture, magnesium chloride can be used as a foliar spray or irrigation additive to supplement magnesium nutrition on crops that are chloride-tolerant. On chloride-sensitive crops or in areas with high soil chloride levels, magnesium sulphate is the preferred option. Magnesium chloride is also used in livestock water supplementation programs and in the preparation of bittern solutions for various agricultural and food-processing purposes.
