What Is Copper Sulfate Monohydrate?

Copper Sulfate Monohydrate (CuSO₄·H₂O) is the dehydrated form of copper sulphate containing 35–36% copper, compared to 25% in the more commonly known pentahydrate (blue vitriol). The monohydrate is a light blue powder with low moisture content and better flowability, making it preferred for dry-blending operations in micronutrient fertilizer manufacturing. Its higher copper concentration means less product is required per unit of Cu delivered.

Monohydrate vs Pentahydrate in Blending

The choice between copper sulphate monohydrate and pentahydrate depends on the application. For dry blending, the monohydrate is preferred due to its powder form, lower hygroscopicity, and higher Cu content — both factors that improve blend quality and storage stability. For foliar sprays and fertigation, the pentahydrate dissolves more readily in water and is the more common choice. In livestock mineral mixes and technical industrial applications, the monohydrate is widely specified.
