What Is Zinc Sulphate?
Zinc Sulphate is available in two forms: monohydrate (ZnSO₄·H₂O) containing approximately 35% Zn, and heptahydrate (ZnSO₄·7H₂O) containing approximately 22% Zn. Both forms are water-soluble and provide plant-available zinc, which is essential for enzyme activity, auxin biosynthesis, and protein synthesis. Zinc is the most widely deficient micronutrient in South African agricultural soils, particularly in sandy and leached soils, and in irrigated maize-producing regions.
Zinc Sulphate in Crop Programs
Zinc deficiency in maize (white bud or striping of young leaves) is widespread in South Africa and can cause severe yield losses if uncorrected. Broadcast soil applications of zinc sulphate at 5–10 kg/ha correct soil zinc levels for several seasons. Foliar applications of 0.5–1% zinc sulphate solution provide faster correction during the growing season. The monohydrate powder form is preferred for dry blending due to its lower moisture content and better flowability, while the heptahydrate crystal is commonly used for foliar sprays and fertigation.
