Expanded Perlite as a Multifunctional Industrial Mineral
Perlite is a naturally occurring amorphous volcanic glass that, when rapidly heated above 870 °C, expands 4–20 times its original volume as water vapour is released, producing a white, lightweight cellular structure. Expanded perlite grades are selected for their particle size, bulk density, and surface area. As a filter aid, it produces clarification in food and beverage processing superior to diatomaceous earth in many pH ranges. As a construction aggregate, it dramatically reduces the weight and thermal conductivity of concrete and plaster mixes.
Grades and Packaging
Terracore supplies standard filter-aid grade, coarse horticultural grade, and construction-aggregate grade perlite. Filter-aid and fine grades are packed in 20 kg PE-lined paper sacks; coarse grades in 50 kg sacks or bulk bags. COA reports bulk density, moisture, and pH. SDS is provided (nuisance dust controls apply).
Applications
- Industrial filter aid (beer, wine, pharmaceuticals)
- Lightweight construction aggregate and plaster filler
- Horticultural growing medium and soil conditioner
- Cryogenic insulation (LNG tank perlite fill)
- Fireproofing aggregate in passive fire protection
- Refractory and foundry mould mix
