Hydroquinone in Industrial and Cosmetic Chemistry
Hydroquinone (benzene-1,4-diol) is a widely used industrial antioxidant and reducing agent. In monomer storage and transportation it is employed at low concentration (50–200 ppm) as a radical scavenger to prevent premature polymerisation of acrylic acid, styrene, and methyl methacrylate. In rubber compounding it functions as an antioxidant. Cosmetically it is the standard active ingredient in prescription and OTC skin-lightening formulations, acting as an inhibitor of the enzyme tyrosinase in melanin biosynthesis.
Grades and Supply
Terracore supplies technical grade (industrial inhibitor applications) and cosmetic/pharmaceutical grade (regulated for topical use). Both grades are in 25 kg lined paper sacks. COA includes purity by redox titration, melting point, and colour (APHA). Full SDS with CMR classification guidance is provided.
Applications
- Polymerisation inhibitor for acrylate monomers
- Photographic developer (black-and-white)
- Rubber antioxidant and antiozonant
- Cosmetic skin-lightening active
- Reductive bleaching agent
- Chemical intermediate for anthraquinone dyes
