Benzyl Chloride as an Alkylating Agent
Benzyl chloride is a reactive benzylic halide, highly reactive in nucleophilic substitution reactions. It is the precursor to benzyl alcohol (by hydrolysis), benzyl esters (with carboxylates), and the widely used benzalkonium chloride family of cationic biocides (by quaternisation with tertiary amines). In pharmaceutical synthesis, benzyl chloride introduces the benzyl protecting group for carboxyl and hydroxyl functions, one of the most widely employed protecting groups in API synthesis.
Regulatory and Safety Notes
Benzyl chloride is a lachrymatory compound classified as a probable human carcinogen. Terracore supplies to industrial customers only, with mandatory end-use disclosure. Supplied in 200 L stainless-lined steel drums. PPE requirements (full-face shield, chemical-resistant gloves, enclosed system handling) and TDG/SDS documentation are provided.
Applications
- Benzyl ester and ether synthesis
- Quaternary ammonium biocide production
- Pharmaceutical intermediate (benzyl groups)
- Dye and fragrance chemical synthesis
- Benzyl alcohol oxidation/reduction pathways
- Resin and polymer synthesis
