Itaconic Acid as a Bio-Based Monomer
Itaconic acid is produced by fungal fermentation of carbohydrates, making it one of the few commercially available bio-based unsaturated diacids. It is used as a reactive co-monomer in acrylic fiber production to improve dyeability and solubility. In superabsorbent polymers, itaconic acid incorporation enhances gel strength and swelling performance. Growing interest in bio-based and sustainable polymers is driving increased adoption across coatings, adhesives, and specialty resins.
Supply and Packaging
Terracore supplies itaconic acid in 25 kg polyethylene-lined paper bags. Material is stored in dry conditions to prevent hygroscopic caking. COA reports purity by titration or HPLC, moisture, and melting point. SDS is provided.
Applications
- Acrylic fiber and SAN copolymer modification
- Superabsorbent polymer (SAP) co-monomer
- Coating and adhesive resin modifier
- Detergent builder co-monomer
- Synthetic lubricant additive
- Bio-based polymer platform
